The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board (DSSMSSAB) was created in the District Social Services Administration Board Act in 1998. The Board is made up of nine locally elected political representatives, six  from the City of Sault Ste. Marie, one from Prince Township and two from  the Sault North Planning Board Area. These areas represent the geographic jurisdiction of the Board.

The DSSMSSAB is responsible for the provision of Ontario Works, Community Child Care, Social Housing and Emergency Medical Services The DSSMSSAB contracts with the City of Sault Ste. Marie to deliver these services on their behalf.  Staff from the Social Services Department, responsible for Ontario Works, Child Care and Social Housing as well as the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responsible for Emergency Medical Services (Land Ambulance), provide regular reports to the Board on the financial and operational status of these programs and the level of need within our community for these programs.

These four programs are highly regulated by the provincial government through legislation and regulations which set out parameters for service levels as well as cost sharing arrangements between the province and the DSSMSSAB. There are a number of social service areas where the provincial government is looking at making changes. As these changes occur and impact on our services the website will be updated to reflect any new developments.
